New Mass MP3 Files

posted Oct 3, 2011 1:22 PM by Deaf Apostolate Shared Account   [ updated Oct 3, 2011 1:22 PM ]

Good People,

http://www.bostoncatholic.org/Offices-And-Services/Office-Detail.aspx?id=12442&pid=464 is a good link.  We have to give this to our interpreter brother and sisters.  Why?  This can help them learn the new English for the Mass.  Explain to them that they need to right click on the different parts of the mass and they can download the target so that they can listen to it on some device that can play mp3 files.  Anything, even any phone, can do that these days.

You can also right click below and chose "save link as" from the drop down.

A Resource for interpreting the Readings for Mass

posted Dec 20, 2010 5:26 PM by Jenny Corbin   [ updated May 26, 2011 9:11 AM by Deaf Apostolate Shared Account ]

Dear interpreter friends/colleagues:
It has just occurred to me that perhaps not everyone knows about a great feature available on the USCCB website. Instead of making an unsuspecting family member read the readings aloud while you practice signing them (which I have done) or sign them while reading to yourself (which is not very effective) or sign while reading aloud (which is just downright confusing!) I will show you a still more excellent way:

1). go to www.usccb.org
2) click on readings tab at top of page
3). select day you need from the calendar tool in the sidebar (NB: for Saturday vigil Mass select the following Sunday)
4). there should appear a blue link that says either text or audio. Click on audio and sign along with the readings!

Unfortunately the audio feature is only available on the day of, as far as I can tell. However, it is very helpful at some point before leaving the house to put on the audio version of the readings and sign along, really helps to put you in the right frame of mind, develop a schema for where to set-up people/places in your signing space, etc. Good luck and have fun!

Preparing to interpret a Confirmation

posted Nov 4, 2010 10:43 AM by Deaf Apostolate Shared Account   [ updated Nov 4, 2010 11:10 AM ]

Most of the info below can be found in the
OF THE
CATECHISM
OF THE

Confirmation as an event is 99.9% of the time basically the same as a Catholic Mass.  Within the Mass there is the Sacrament of Confirmation.  That means that there are readings as at Mass, then, before the Eucharist there is the sacrament of Confirmaiton.  That means there is a calling down of the Holy Spirit and then through an anointing with consecrated oil (more about this below) the full gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to the Candidates completing what began at their Baptism.  The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are given and for the songs, homilies, and prayers it might be good to be aware of these gifts.

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit:

1. Wisdom
2. Understanding
3. Counsel
4. Fortitude
5. Knowledge
6. Piety
7. Fear of the Lord

In the Mass the gift of fear of the Lord is sometimes translated as a spirit of reverence and awe before the Lord.  One of the Readings is usually from Isaih Chapter 11 " The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, A spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD."

Another list that sometimes comes up in homilies at confirmation is the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. These gifts come from living out of the gifts. Paul refers to this list in Galatians, Chapter 5.

The list is:

The twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit:

1. Charity
2. Joy
3. Peace
4. Patience
5. Kindness
6. Goodness
7. Generosity
8. Gentleness
9. Faithfulness
10. Modesty
11. Self-control
12. Chastity

It would be good to have these vocabulary words ready to go for the any confirmation.

The consecrated oil (called Sacred Chrism). Might be referred to in many different ways:

Anointing from above
Oil poured over the head and running down the beard and over the color
Oil of gladness
Sacred Chrism

It is olive oil that has been mixed with perfume.  It has been blessed in the loose sense of the word.   More properly it has been consecrated with for interpreting purposes we can simply say it is more strongly blesses.  It is not simply blessed. It is consecrated.  That is to say it is blessed and the word consecrated gets spelled out maybe.  The Bishop of each diocese of the world blesses three oils during a big Mass called the Chrism mass with his priests for the celebrations of sacraments.  Two of the oils are blessed. One is consecrated and mixed with oil.  That is the one used at confirmation.

The special word for the Holy Spirit Paraclete might be used.  This means The Advocate and is signed that way.  You could also spell it and sign it depending on the situation.

Finally, if you need to provide assistance for a person who is being confirmed or a sponsor with one of the people being confirmed you will need to know the little dialogue that goes on between the priest/bishop and the person being confirmed. The forehead of the baptized is anointed with the sacred crism with the words, “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit”.  They respond, "amen." Then Bishop, "Peace be with you." The person responds, "and also with you."

In Christ,
Fr. St. Martin
